Like sunlight opening up an entirely different view, a new twist on an old thing can cast light where there was shadow.
I found that happening when I stumbled on this cover of a Bob Marley song on Pandora.

This particular recording of the song he wrote, Three Little Birds, gets new life through the voice of Elizabeth Mitchell and her sweet little daughter. The female vocals, the lighter quality of the accompaniment, in fact, the entire feel of this cover tastes, smells, looks and sounds different from Marley’s version.
I’ve listened to both. Both versions play well, but, sorry to tell you, I prefer the newer version. It feels light-hearted and freeing without a sense of a background agenda. It just seems happier.
But don’t take my word for it. Listen to both and tell me what you think and why.

That is a heart crusher. I want to squish that little girl. I think I’d like this to be the first thing I hear when I wake up from now on, rather than the heart attack of a buzzer on my alarm clock. Yes, I vote this song to take it’s place. In fact, I’d be happy to hear anything as long as this tiny tot could announce it:
“You owe more on your taxes this year.” No problem.
“Your fish just died.” Shoot, but okay.
“Have a pickle.” You bet, and how bout a hug?

Sorry – I’d happily disagree. 🙂 This has been one of my favorites for decades and although the Mitchell version is cute, it loses the artistry, atmosphere & character that Marley and his group did.

Don’t mean to rant but maybe it struck a soft spot in me – one more comment – not sure why you’d feel there’s a shadow there. This song always brought a LOT of light to me. Marley was actually very spiritual for a pop singer although not in the way most white culture would perceive it. His father was white, and mother black yet he gave the credit to God for bringing them together. I can’t recall his exact quote about this, as it was heavy with a Jamaican overtone. But, his quote surely let you know of his belief and faith in God.

I didn’t mean shadow in a negative way. Just the way light makes things look one way when the light hits it from one direction and then it can look different when the light hits it from another direction. Both songs cast a different light on the same lyrics. I like both angles. Thanks for the info about him. He brought a ton of positive stuff into the sixties with his music and lyrics.

Awwww, I loved both versions. I’ve never heard the song before. I also learned who Bob Marley was. Very interesting guy. Too bad he died so young.
